DURC Trip to Norway
July 1996

Introduction

The 1996 Rucksack Club trip to Norway took place in the first two weeks of July. Apart from the long periods spent travelling, the time was split equally between the Lofoten Islands and Sulitjelma.

Both areas are inside the Arctic Circle and so at that time of the year the sun never sets. Despite a deserved reputation for being the wettest part of Norway, we found Lofoten to be very warm and sunny. Sulitjelma was more cloudy but still warm. Nevertheless, a number of permanent icefields and glaciers can be found in the area, along with arctic flora and fauna.
