Yorkshire cave areas: Leck Fell
Some of the popular pot-holes on Leck Fell and nearby fells are
- Ireby Fell Cavern,
with pitches named from a nursery rhyme: Ding, Dong, Bell, Pussy and Well.
The pitches are technically easy and not too deep, and the bottom contains
some nice rift passage and the beautiful Duke Street with its wide scalloped
ceiling, making this a popular trip.
- Marble Steps Pot
- New Rift Pot and Large Pot are two that are connected at the bottom by a
muddy duck, making for fun exchange trips!
- Lost John's is a complex cave and has three major routes down making it a
good trip for larger groups. All three meet for a hairy traverse called
BattleAxe leading out over the Valhalla pitch head to avoid the roaring torrent.
Unfortunately loose boulder slopes at the bottom make exploring the further
reaches more risky.
- Notts Pot, another complex cave, connected via sumps to Ireby Fell Cavern
and Lost John's.
- Rumbling Hole, a large entrance but with a tight connection at the bottom
to Lost John's
- Lost Pot, another connection to the Lost John's system.
- Boxhead Pot, named in memory of Alan Box, is a new entrance on the fell
which connects through a rather wet tube at the bottom to Lost John's.
The pot was bolted up from the bottom and found to be so near to the surface
that, with a little help, the action of winter floods opened it up to daylight.
