Yorkshire cave areas: West Kingsdale
The Western side of Kingsdale contains many fine holes, including
- Bull Pot, five pitches with little horizontal development lead to a sump.
A bit of fun for a Sunday trip or for novices.
- Jingling Pot,
a single open shaft of 45m, with an interesting underground
route to the bottom called Lateral Cleft. Rigging the belay from a tree which
overhangs the shaft provides for an interesting ascent when it can be heard
creaking!
- Rowten Pot, a classic Yorkshire pot with a big open shaft. Linked to
Valley Entrance by three short, free-diveable sumps (given a suitable
mentality).
- Yordas Cave is often visited by the public as it has a large walk-in
entrance but a traverse during floods can show a different character.
- Valley Entrance, popular with novices as it has only a single small pitch
into the Kingsdale Master Cave. The duck near the entrance seems to be lower
now than in previous years but the Master Cave can still contain dangerous
undercurrents into the sump.
- Simpsons Pot and Swinsto Pot, join Valley Entrance at the bottom in
the Kingsdale Master Cave. They are popular pull-through trips but the
advent of bolted SRT routes disguises the fact that they are still pots
to be respected.
