Caves of Schichallion
Schichallion is a mountain in Perthshire at the south end of the Cairngorms,
a few miles south of Loch Rannoch. It has long figured in the study of
earth sciences being the site where, in 1774, Nevil Maskelyne, the Astronomer
Royal, conducted his experiment to weigh the earth against the mountain,
arriving at an earth density of 4.5.
A scattering of caves around this mountain's base awaits the keen collector.
On the north-west flank are some small active caves in folded metamorphic
dolomitic limestone as well as some in the Allt Mor Valleu on the south-west
flank.
